Sonic Megamix
« on: April 09, 2007, 01:27:25 pm »
I have no idea why I never posted this here before, but there you go. Anywho...

Sonic 1 Megamix. Originally started as a solo project, simple palette hack, and small music edit, eventually transformed into something much more sophisticated over the last two years. From a solo project, to a huge group effort. Some have stayed on the project; others have left. But what remains is what a true collaborative effort between those with unique skills can accomplish.

But enough of the babble, yes?

Sonic 1 Megamix is a ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, for the Sega Megadrive (or Genesis, if you will). It aims to be both technically impressive, and fun to play, taking into account the elements that a Sonic game is known for. It incorporates elements from both old and new, trying to make a combination that can even prove that, indeed, even the newer Sonic games had some good ideas - ones that even work well in 2D.

Oh wait, I was done with the babble. Silly me! On to the facts...

THE TEAM:

-Tweaker (Music/Programming/Project Coordinator)
-Stealth (Programming)
-Cinossu (Music/Programming)
-Robjoe1107 (Level Layouts)
-StephenUK (Art/Programming)
-Yuski (Sprites)
-ChimpoMcCrazypants (Sprites/Art)
-jman2050 (Programming)
-Upthorn (Debugging/Programming)

THE GENERAL INFO:

NOTE: Following is mostly outdated, due to me being lazy and liking copy/paste. Read original thread here for past discussion and updates.

-----------------------------

Bugfixes in this release:
- Double Jump fixed for Shadow; Jump Dash added for Sonic
- Issue of life icons not loading while starting a game from the options screen fixed -- you'll like the new system better. =P
- Zone layouts for Sunset Hill (GHZ) and Starry Night (SLZ) are complete. New layouts thanks to Robjoe1107.
- Music playlist modified (and that damn Splash Down port fixed =P)
- Various bugs fixed (Like the starting position in LZ3)

Features include:
- Seperate music for each act

- S2 level select and options menus edited to fit with my hack (Stealth)

- Perfect Spindash for each character (Stealth)

- 3 Characters: Sonic, Mighty and Shadow -- Each later to have thier own special move and physics stats. Thanks to Yuski for Mighty sprites and JohnnyUK for Shadow sprites.

- Sonic 2 running physics -- Run down a slope in SLZ and you'll go as fast as you do in CPZ. AKA slope related acceleration. (Stealth)

...among other things.

Moves, and controls to use them:

Homing Attack - B/C near an enemy/monitor after a jump
Light Dash - A near a set of rings (Sonic only)
Jump Dash - B/C in air when no enemies/monitors are around (Sonic Only)
Double Jump - B/C in air when no enemies/monitors are around (Shadow only)
Light Speed Attack - Hold A and do a homing attack near multiple enemies/monitors. 5 ring cost for each additional target after the first.
Spindash - ...you'd better know this one.

For some follow up, the music choices are extremely outdated, for the most part. I'd suggest taking a look at the videos for the most info - after all, a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Imagine how many words are in a video! :D

With that said, enjoy - and comments, suggestions, and general discussion are welcome and encouraged. Please be aware, though, that we have our own ideas and direction with this hack, so don't be sad if your suggestions or requests aren't honored. :P

I played it...and I was kinda disappointed.  I thought I was getting what was in the screens.  It was better in a sense that it was more finished, but most of it was exactly like Sonic 1.  I was looking forward to those extras.  I will say this though, I forgot about them until I reached Misty Maze and wondered why it didn't look badass like the screens and vids.

also I played this one Gens+, so I'm guessing it can work on Gens9 as well.

Some of the stuff in the vids and screens is either old (early shots) or isn't implemented yet in the current release. Pretty much (provided this is the same version as he's linked to at TSS) only Sunset Hill and Starry Night are fully layed out. And none of the elemental shields.
<Tails> also "GET BLUE SPHERES" on a black-and-white TV remains the best special stage of all time

Yeah, version 2.0 is pretty shit compared to what the videos actually consist of (the last build was released August 2006...!). The next release, v3.0 will be much, MUCH better.

well besides from some glitches (like going through walls), the controls were pretty solid.  I didn't do that much light dashing but still it was enjoyable and I played it through without realising it.  Cant wait for v3.0, waiting on another fangame to get updated also :/

also the music was badass.  will it be the same soundtrack or something different like the vids?  man, could almost name every song that I heard and a nice arrangement with some surprises for my ears...and they fight the stage!

Yeah, there hasn't been a public release for a very long time; the roms available are pretty weak sauce in comparison to the other media.

To sum up the changes since for those who don't care to read the 44-page s2beta topic, the next build will have the option of either original or new level design/music/art and a few new moves like STT-style roll-in-the-air as Sonic and Rush-style instant dash (for 5 rings) as Shadow.

It's supposed to be pretty close to the next public release, so I'm not sure why he didn't wait for that to make a topic <_<

Great work so far. And yay for Moonwalker music in some levels! (I want Beat It. :<)

My suggestions for v3.0:
-Sonic CD spindash (at least for Sonic :<)
-Peel Out
-That background for Labyrinth. *sob*
-I personally don't like the Sonic 3 invincibility music, but maybe that's just me. >_>;

But it's really good so far. How long did it take to make it?

EDIT: Watched the vids, if you include all the stuff from the videos into V3.0, it will be teh ultimate pwnage.

I'm an owner of the older version of Megamix, which RPG showed to me... I look forward to the next release, but I'm bugged about one thing:

I like the implementations of Light Dash and Ancient Light in the game, however, logically Light Dash would also be available for Shadow, so why doesn't Shadow get it?

Haha, Gunstar Heroes sound effects, fucking awesome.

One thing that bothers me is that the homing attack works on enemies that are above Sonic. This isn't the case in the 3D games or Sonic Rush, and I think it gets in the way a bit much if it's too good as it is here.

Hmm

actually, I was thinking about it, and I do like the various features you've given characters, such as the light dash homing attack and double jump, but unless I'm missing something Mighty doesn't seem to be much different from sonic. And shadow also seems to have a homing attack in addition to a double jump. It would make much more sense to make each character unique from each other rather than have them share some of these special techniques.

Another thing that I've noticed is that these features have made sonic 1 alot easier, in particular, the double jump, though the homing attacks are convenient as well. Perhaps you could up the difficulty level of the stages a bit then to accomodate for these features. Maybe even put some seperate routes for Shadow and his double jump only, sort of like sonic and knuckles seperate routes in S3&K

otherwise I really enjoyed it. The music especially!

oh, also

yay, go me!

Already done. ;P

Like I said, this build is oooooooooooooooold. I may get the new one out this week (which is about 9 months since the last release...!), so keep your eyes peeled. :P

I also suggest looking at the videos over playing the old release - it gives a much better impression of the recent gameplay additions.

I just realised something about Misty Maze zone. As much as the edited background is gourgeous, it makes one wonder how Sonic can be underwater while in the background the sea level is clearly far below him. =P

I'm also personally not keen on Mighty's end-of-level fanfare (though the Gunstar Heroes fanfare you used for Shadow works perfectly).

Mighty has Chaotix's fanfare heh

On a related note, I am hot for this

EDIT: I *just* realised what you meant Crow, and I think the background is designed to "change" the way that Hydrocity and Launch Base etc's do with the surface.

Tho it would be serious awesome if you guys had implemented that.

The background's adapted from a Sonic CD special stage, so it didn't have below surface imagery.

I recently decided to randomly attempt a TAS of the game with entertainment as the main goal with much emphasis on speed, but not as much as entertainment.  Using the most recent public release, check it out.

edit: http://download.yousendit.com/71929A3903894141

Now the first 2 3 zones are complete.  DF3 sucked.  On the Robotnik battle, a key hiccup caused me to hit the lava.  There was also an ugly pause.  Again, entertainment is the main emphasis.  CO was somewhat smooth.

My apologies for leaving you all in the dark for so long.

A release is still coming, albeit later, but I think it was worth the wait - there's a lot more content to it than there would have been had it been released earlier this month. Just stay patient, and you will be rewarded.
